The Palermitan, n.85 in the world, will face the Australian Alex de Minaur (n.19) in the second round.
Lorenzo Sonego was immediately eliminated from the tournament, defeated in straight sets on his debut by the German Jan Lennard Struff with a score of 6-3 6-1 in 75 minutes of play.
The Piedmontese had also been eliminated in the first round last year in the Spanish capital.
