The explorer Christopher Columbus is accused of fraud? A new study claims that the Vikings discovered America 500 years before Columbus - and there is conclusive evidence

Why did the Vikings not succeed in taking over the American continent?

Not only was Christopher Columbus not the one who discovered America, but he also arrived 500 years late.

According to new research recently published in the journal Antiquity, it was adventurous Vikings who reached the Americas 500 years before the legendary Italian explorer and navigator arrived there in 1492. "Viking

voyages were made from Greenland to North America throughout the period of Norse settlement in Greenland," wrote archaeologists from the University of Iceland, who authored The surprising research, as reported by the Times Of London.

Scientists came to this groundbreaking claim after examining wood samples from five northern sites in West Greenland, which were lived there between 1000 and 1400, according to the DailyMail.

They tried to determine the origin of the trees after examining historical records that showed that the Vikings who conquered Greenland between 985 and 1450 relied on wood and other materials imported from Europe and America.

The Scandinavian sailors used them, along with driftwood, to build objects, boats and other purposes for which the local wood was suitable.

In order to determine the proportion of alien wood, scientists analyzed its cellular structure and identified some of the trees as hemlock and pine.

These species were not grown in Europe during the second millennium, leading researchers to conclude that they came from the "New World".

The findings verified historical Viking sagas, which stated that Norse explorers such as Leif Eriksson - the alleged first European visitor to the Americas - brought back wood from Vinland, the Norse name for the region of North America's coastline along the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

On a larger scale, the latest discovery means that "the resources were brought by the Norse from North America for much longer than previously thought."

According to a 2021 study, a previous analysis of Viking woodcutter sites at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada found woodcut samples dating back to 1021 AD.

The results also confirmed that the Vikings established multiple trade routes across the northwest Atlantic, perhaps half a millennium before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

They may have made these transatlantic voyages up until just before Europe's official age of exploration began in the 1400s.

"These findings highlight the fact that the Norse Greenlanders had the means, the knowledge and the appropriate vessels to cross the Davis Strait towards the east coast of North America, at least until the 14th century," according to the study.

The researchers concluded that by "demonstrating the variety of wood sources used by the Norse in Greenland," they were able to illustrate the level of "connections across the medieval North Atlantic world."

The question of how the Greenland civilization disappeared remains a mystery.

However, researchers have pointed to several possibilities, from falling temperatures to poor resource management—and even plague and piracy.
