More than one hundred writers, actors, journalists, directors and other public figures have signed an open letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin calling for an end to the abuses in prison against Alexey Navalny and the release of the opponent, detained for political reasons .

Among the signatories are Svetlana Alexievich, Anne Applebaum, Margaret Atwood, Jude Law, Salman Rushdie, Orhan Pamuk, Herta Muller, Eric Cantona, Olga Tokarczuk, Mario Vargas Llosa.


"As we write, as you well know, Alexey Navalny is being held in IK-6, one of the toughest penal colonies in your country", reads the text addressed to Putin and taken up by Meduza.

The letter denounces that the opponent "is continually placed in solitary confinement, crushed in a concrete cell the size of a dog's kennel, without ventilation", that he is "prohibited from family visits and phone calls" and, "despite has a fever, he has to stand up all day".



Writers, actors and directors therefore announce that they are uniting their voices with that of the 600 Russian doctors who have asked for "independent and immediate health care" for the opponent and with that of the one hundred lawyers and one hundred regional deputies who are demanding "



"Navalny is serving a prison term on charges that would never have been accepted in any independent judicial system," the letter said.

"We support the request of the German government, the American authorities and the European Union asking for his immediate release. It is within his power", conclude the signatories addressing Putin.
