Abandoned puppies are lying under a barn: When animal rights activist Jessie Tussing finds out about it, she sets off immediately.

But things turned out differently than expected.

It's after work when Jessie Tussing, the caregiver for shelter animals at

Heartland Humane Shelter & Care

in Oregon, gets a call.

Puppies were found under a barn - presumably abandoned.

Together with her two daughters, the animal rights activist jumps into the car and sets off.

Daylight is slowly coming to an end.

There is not much time left.

It's pitch black in the barn.

The women peek into every corner with a flashlight – but there is no sign of the puppies.

Eventually they come up with the idea that the little ones must be under the building.

With the permission of the barn owner, they remove one of the floor panels and lo and behold, they find it.

They carefully wrap the puppies in a blanket and take them outside.

Here they can still see something and are surprised to find that they are not dogs.

But then what?

"I've racked my brains trying to remember what breed of puppies have this coloring," Tussing tells

.

"It took me a minute to really understand what I was looking at."

They go through all kinds of animals in their minds.

One of her daughters pulls out her smartphone and simply googles it.

"She went through the list of species that she knew lived in the area and after ruling out foxes and raccoons, she looked for coyote pups," explains Tussing.

Bingo.

After consulting with an expert at the local wildlife center, they decided to put the puppies back under the barn.

The little ones seemed well fed, so the mother must be around somewhere.

"I said to my girls, 'We have to bring them back.

These are not pets.'”

Luckily, when the owner of the barn found out about the mix-up, he was very understanding and agreed to avoid the barn until the coyote family found a new home.
