2023-05-03T13:03:28.780Z

For years now, Buckingham employees have been preparing, in the shadows, the festivities relating to the coronation of Charles III. An operation known as the “Golden Orb”.

He became king on September 8, 2022, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

On May 6, Charles III will be officially crowned.

A ceremony that Buckingham employees have been preparing in the shadows for several years now.

The code name for this operation: “

Golden Orb

”.

Understand, "golden orb", the name of the circular object that the king will hold during the ceremony, a golden sphere surmounted by a cross, symbol of authority.

The name of this project was leaked in 2016.

A shorter ceremony

In this period of crisis in the United Kingdom, the coronation of Charles III will be less long and costly than that of Elizabeth II.

It will also bring together fewer guests.

If the ceremony organized for the sovereign had lasted three hours, that of Charles will last one hour, and will omit certain stages, such as the presentation of gold bars to the sovereign, less appropriate in these times of inflation.

The ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey in London, as has been the case for previous coronations of British monarchs for 900 years.

A royal procession

As tradition dictates, it will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church.

“The coronation is a solemn religious service, as well as an occasion for celebration and pageantry,” says Buckingham Palace.

The ceremony "will be forward-looking, while being steeped in tradition and long-standing pageantry."

On the first day, Charles III and Camilla will take part in a procession.

They will arrive in Westminster from the Royal Palace.

After the ceremony, they will retrace their steps as part of the 'Coronation Procession', for which they will be joined by other members of the Royal Family.

To conclude this first day, the king and queen consort, accompanied by members of the royal family, will appear on the balcony of the royal residence, to greet the crowd.

A concert in Windsor

The second day will see a concert at Windsor Castle, west London, featuring "international music icons and contemporary stars".

The population will also be invited on May 7 to participate in the "grand coronation breakfast", neighborhood parties to "celebrate friendship".

The third day, Monday May 8, will be a public holiday, and people will be encouraged to volunteer.

The move aims to “bring people together and create a movement that will last beyond coronation weekend,” the palace said.
