No more mention of "consort": Charles III imposes the title "Queen Camilla" on all official documents

2023-05-05T13:52:19.902Z

According to the British press, the king of England has demanded that his wife Camilla Parker Bowles be fully named “queen” after her coronation, and no longer “queen consort”. A change of plan which aims to further legitimize his companion.

This Saturday, May 6, Camilla Parker Bowles will be crowned “queen”, at Westminster Abbey in London, alongside her husband Charles III.

And no, "queen consort", as was originally intended.

According to numerous media outlets, including the

Evening Standard

, the King issued a Royal Warrant to replace the term "Queen Consort" in his wife's title.

And this, from the day of his coronation.

This request states that the change of title of Camilla, 75, must be entered “in all prayers addressed to the Royal Family and said at services of the Church of England”, of which Charles, 74, is the governor supreme.

Royal Transition

While Camilla's new title won't officially come into effect until she's crowned, royal documentation has already begun the transition.

On the official coronation invitation, Buckingham Palace already refers to the king's wife as 'Queen Camilla'.

A first since the accession to the throne of Charles III in September, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The tradition however wants that the title of “queen consort” is given to the wife of a king.

That of “queen” is, meanwhile, reserved for women who have inherited the status of monarch through their lineage, like Elizabeth II, crowned after the death of her father, King George VI.

A long debated title

In recent years, the title given to Camilla has been the subject of intense debate.

And for good reason: for a long time, the British considered her a homewrecker, for having been the mistress of Charles when he was still married to Lady Diana.

For this reason, it had been decided that Camilla (ex “Parker Bowles”) would only carry the title of “princess consort”.

A title which, to date, had never been awarded in the history of the British monarchy.

Charles did everything to legitimize Camilla

Philip Kyle, biographer of Charles III

A year ago, however, plans changed.

On February 5, 2022, on the eve of her platinum jubilee (70 years of reign), Elizabeth II had against all expectations expressed “the sincere wish” that “when the time comes, Camilla will be known as queen consort, because she will continue her loyal services”.

A royal dubbing that was welcome.

"When you see how far you've come, it's almost Hollywood," said Philip Kyle, biographer of Charles III, to

Madame Figaro

.

"Camilla has long been [Charles'] strength ... he did everything to legitimize her."
