Anyone who goes shopping for juice in the supermarket or discounter should always keep their eyes open.
Because what's on the outside is often not what's in there.
A look at the list of ingredients helps.
Fruit or vegetable juices can be found in every supermarket or discounter and are readily bought by customers in Germany.
But you should always take a close look: because the ingredients advertised on the labels are extremely unevenly distributed.
It is therefore worth taking a look at the list of ingredients and the distribution of the ingredients.
HEIDELBERG24 explains why:
Per capita fruit juice consumption | 20.4 liters (status: 2022) |
market volume | EUR 3.2 billion |
Most popular fruit juice | orange juice |
Doesn't say what's on the label: often refilled with juice in the supermarket
Various fruit and vegetable juices are simply part of the German diet.
Each citizen consumes around 30 liters a year, making them the third most popular non-alcoholic beverage after water and soft drinks.
Statistically, around 7.5 liters of orange juice in particular are drunk per capita every year.
Luckily, juices come in different flavors and at different prices.
The beautiful, colorful images of different fruits and vegetables on the pack entice consumers to buy.
Many different fruits give the impression of a high fruit content.
But that is usually deceptive: Many juices in supermarkets or discounters often only consist of a small part of the fruit shown and are often "stretched" with water and apple juice.
By the way: Every year the deceptive package of the year is chosen: in 2022 it was Rama.
Only refilled juice in the supermarket: NDR reveals
In one program, the NDR
took
a closer look at popular juices and examined the actual proportion of fruits shown on the label.
The products presented contained only a fraction of the advertised fruit.
For example, the "Mango-Orange-Ananas" from the Valensina brand has only one percent mango pulp, still 15 percent pineapple juice - but a full 42 percent orange juice from orange juice concentrate.
With these products, it is also worth taking a look at the ingredients, as they may contain insects.
Five percent of the remaining juice is filled with banana pulp and 37 percent with apple juice.
The last ingredient in particular is often used as a filler in juices because it is cheap and there is a lot of it available in Germany.
Consumers are therefore advised to always look at the list of ingredients, because there you can see exactly what proportion of the supposed exotic juice actually consists of these fruits or whether the product was largely filled with apple juice.
