Two pregnant women were hospitalized last week at the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv due to food poisoning and fear of contracting Listeria, after eating at the "Topolopompo" restaurant.

The Ministry of Health is investigating the case.

The two ate at the restaurant on Wednesday, and have been hospitalized at the medical center since Thursday.

What is listeria?

Listeria Monocytogenes (Listeria Monocytogenes) is a bacteria known since the beginning of the 19th century and is one of the reasons why it is not recommended to consume raw fish during pregnancy.

It causes infections in the vast majority of cases in a vulnerable population (immunosuppressed, tender babies, the elderly and also pregnant women).

More rarely, it causes morbidity even in a healthy population

.

The bacterium has been identified in less than 1% of food poisoning cases, despite its great resistance, at different refrigeration temperatures and a high range of acidity.

The bacterium comes from the soil and can be found in a large variety of foods, especially salted meat and milk products.

What are the symptoms?

The bacterium incubates for about 24 hours and then erupts.

The symptoms of the disease include fever, weakness, fatigue, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, with the greatest fear of infection being invasion and damage to the nervous system, meningitis and encephalitis.

In pregnant women, the infection can cause harm to the fetus and even the loss of the pregnancy.

If the infection has spread to the blood, it may cause sepsis with damage to vital organs to which it has spread.

Prevention and treatment

The disease is treated with antibiotics.

Not every antibiotic treatment is effective against the bacteria and it is important to match the correct treatment to the bacteria and the patient.

Pregnant women, for example, cannot receive some of the antibiotic drugs, both because of the effectiveness and because of toxicity to the fetus.

It is very important to treat the symptoms and relieve the pain, prevent dehydration, give anti-nausea drugs, etc.

The best treatment, as always, is preventive: proper preservation of food, sufficient cooking of foodstuffs, maintenance of personal and environmental hygiene.
