In the current broadcast of the Literary Quartet it was very busy. Juli Zeh, Eva Menasse and Cornelius Pollmer discussed four new publications of the Book Spring with Thea Dorn. Especially the book "Still awake?" polarized and caused a heated exchange of blows between the guests right at the beginning of the show.

Right at the beginning of the show, which was recorded at the Berliner Ensemble, the guests immersed themselves in an exchange of blows with the presenter Thea Dorn about the new book "Still awake?" by Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre. Here the mood came up again, as one knew it from old broadcasts with Marcel Reich-Ranicki.

Awesome, dude. It's a children's book!

Juli Zeh on her son about the book "Still awake?"

Stuckrad-Barre's book was the most vividly talked about. While Juli Zeh was of the opinion that the short, simple sentences had looked the media people in the mouth and were very exhausting, the author Eva Menasse found the book linguistically okay, because he writes like the devil who just knows how to do it. However, Menasse could not understand why such a media hype had been built up for the book in advance. She only noticed all this fuss about male authors. Female writers would not be advertised so prominently in advance, which she criticized.

Literary quartet: "Still awake?" is not an investigative novel

Eva Menasse had approached the title with a lot of reservations, because she "didn't really want to like the book". However, she was convinced by the language style and the fast narrative style. Everyone's main criticism of the new book "Still awake?" was that it didn't tell anything new. The book would not have lived up to the pre-announcements here and would in no way have been an investigative novel that many have seen in it.

The other three books, "The Lovers of the Century" (promotional link) by Julia Schorch, Daniel Glattauer's "You don't feel them" (promotional link) and Eugen Ruge's "Pompeii or the Five Speeches of Jowna" (promotional link) almost went down after the initial discussion. In any case, these titles are worth reading, as are the bestsellers of 2022, which are still current and exciting.
