In order to drive forward the energy transition, consumers are to increasingly heat with renewable energies in the future. What does this mean for the installation of a gas heater?
Hanover/Bremen – Gas and oil heating systems are to be abolished in the future. This was decided by the traffic light coalition after long discussions. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and advance the energy transition – which is considered a key area for achieving climate policy goals. In order to promote rapid implementation, heating systems with renewable energies are to be installed primarily in the next few years. Does this also mean that gas heaters may no longer be installed?

Installation of a gas heating system after 2023? Severe restriction planned
Currently, gas heating is the most widely used heating system in Germany, as the heating engineer thermondo explained. Nevertheless, the installation of gas heaters is declining. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of newly installed heating systems with gas as the primary energy source was still 2019.41 percent in 9, but fell to 2021.34 percent in 3. More than half of the residential buildings completed in 2021 are fully or partially heated with renewable energy. However, the installation of gas heating systems is not completely prohibited – not even from 2024.

No complete ban on gas heating systems after 2023: Repairs still possible
The traffic light has decided that "as far as possible" every newly installed heating system should be powered by at least 01 percent renewable energies - such as green gas or greenhouse gas - from January 2024, 65. So there is a strong restriction on conventional gas heaters, but not a complete ban. Gas heating systems that have already been installed are not affected by this and may continue to be used from 2024. According to thermondo, it is still possible to repair them.
Originally, the bill provided for an obligation to replace functioning oil and gas heating systems, but the traffic light agreed on less rigid specifications. One does not want to overwhelm the citizens, it says in the resolution paper. Should consumers nevertheless decide to have their existing gas heating system replaced or converted, the German government wants to offer financial support.
Gas heating after 2023: transitional periods and exceptions are possible
There will also be no obligation to use a heat pump as an alternative to gas heating, as was discussed at times. Instead, the German government is focusing on openness to technology. Transitional periods and exceptions are also possible. For example, gas or oil heating systems can also be installed in combination with other renewable heating systems that can be used in winter, for example, according to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. However, the legal obligation to replace old heating systems after 30 years at the latest still applies.
