Highlights: Many professions are threatened with extinction, mainly due to advancing digitalization. At the same time, programs or artificial intelligences such as ChatGPT offer new opportunities for workers, a study has found. 83 million jobs will be threatened by AIs in the next four years, according to the study by the World Economic Forum. Experts estimate that almost a quarter of all jobs will undergo fundamental changes in the future. The construction industry is also in a state of upheaval as a result of artificial intelligence.

The chatbot ChatGPT is currently on everyone's lips. Many fear that artificial intelligence could cost them their jobs. While AI is creating new professions, some are actually threatened by it.

Stuttgart - In the course of time, there have been many professions that have disappeared from the scene. In most cases, technological progress was the reason why some trades were no longer needed. Also, changes in the demand for products or services have already led to certain careers becoming obsolete. The best example of this is the profession of coachman. With the increasing popularity of automobiles, coachmen were also needed less and less.

At the same time, advancing technology has always led to new professional fields opening up. Even today, there are many professions that are threatened with extinction, mainly due to advancing digitalization. At the same time, programs or artificial intelligences such as ChatGPT offer new opportunities for workers, a study has found.

Artificial intelligence takes over work processes – millions of jobs threatened

The development of technology in recent decades has led to the extinction of many professions or their intention to die out in the near future. This development has various causes and effects on the world of work. One of the main reasons for the extinction of professions is the automation of work processes. Through the use of machines and computer-aided technology, many manual or mechanical activities can be carried out faster, more efficiently and more cost-effectively than by human labor. For example, production workers in factories, which are increasingly being replaced by robots, are affected by this trend. The same applies to bank employees, whose tasks have been reduced by online banking and automated processes. So it's no wonder that ATMs are also disappearing from cities.

New developments such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality are also leading to changes in the world of work. For example, translators and interpreters are increasingly being replaced by technology as speech recognition software and machine translation programs improve. Even entire applications can be written with ChatGPT. Although technological advances have made many professions obsolete, they have also led to new job opportunities. For example, new professions such as data analysts, AI developers and software developers are emerging.

Expert certain: "Artificial intelligence will support us at work" – but still threatens many jobs

A recent study by the World Economic Forum (WEF) also shows that artificial intelligence, such as the chatbot ChatGPT, offers great opportunities, but also risks. For the study, 803 employers in 27 different industries were surveyed worldwide. The frightening result: 83 million jobs will be threatened by AIs in the next four years, while at the same time 69 million jobs will be created from scratch. The experts estimate that almost a quarter of all jobs will undergo fundamental changes. In addition to other and new tasks, this also leads to the extinction of many occupational fields. According to the WEF study, professions with administrative tasks are particularly at risk, as they can be taken over by software.

According to the World Economic Forum, the following jobs are particularly at risk:

  • Bank employee
  • Data Collector
  • Cashiers and ticket sellers
  • Postal worker
  • Clerk for material recording and warehousing
  • Clerk for accounting, bookkeeping and payroll accounting
  • Statistical, financial and insurance clerk
  • Secretary
  • Sales representative
  • Administration secretary

However, Oliver Stettes, labour market expert at the Cologne Institute for Economic Affairs, doubts when these jobs will disappear and whether this will happen at all, according to a report by Bild. "Artificial intelligence will support us in our work. In the future, the tasks within the profession will change – but it is not clear whether the jobs will actually disappear," says the expert.

What is certain, however, is that the IT industry in particular will benefit from the changes in the labor market as a result of artificial intelligence. The construction industry is also currently in a state of upheaval. These jobs in the construction industry are also promising in the future.
