With the Hymn of Europe, the Ode to Joy taken from the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the first session of the Senate of the Republic (May 8, 1948) was closed. President Ignazio La Russa briefly took the floor and "warmly thanked President Mattarella", greeted by a long applause from those present, as had happened at the beginning of the ceremony, at his entrance into the Hall.

"Celebrating this day today means remembering our roots, our Constitution and the fundamental role that the Republican Senate plays in safeguarding democracy and representing the sovereign people", writes Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Twitter, who took part in the ceremony in the morning. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, also participated in the initiatives at Palazzo Madama. Mameli's hymn sung by Gianni Morandi opened the celebrations.

Senate Chamber packed to celebrate the memory of the first sitting of the Upper House of Parliament, which took place on May 8, 1948, 75 years ago. In addition to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (seated next to each other), there are numerous ministers - among others Antonio Tajani, Raffaele Fitto, Luca Ciriani, Gennaro Sangiuliano, Anna Maria Bernini, Elisabetta Casellati, Matteo Piantedosi, Guido Crosetto, Daniela Santanché, Eugenia Roccella - the parliamentary group leaders, the senators for life Mario Monti and Liliana Segre, the former presidents of the Chamber, Gianfranco Fini and Pier Ferdinando Casini. The latter is sitting next to the leader of Italia viva and former prime minister, Matteo Renzi. Also present were Silvana Sciarra, President of the Constitutional Court and Amir Ohana, Speaker of the Israeli Knesset. During the performance of Mameli's anthem by Gianni Morandi, both the Prime Minister and Senator Segre sang.

Urso, 'stamp for the 75th anniversary of the Senate, an important date' - Economy

"A stamp to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first session of the Senate of the Republic by universal suffrage. An important date for our country rich in values such as freedom, democracy, independence and rebirth. Italy also starts from its history". (ANSA)

Applause, some timid clapping in time, many singing softly: this is the Gianni Morandi effect in the Senate Hall, invited by President Ignazio La Russa. At the end of the mini-concert (the choice falls on his most famous songs, including the last song with which he won Sanremo last year, 'Open all the doors'), the singer approached the benches to shake hands with the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the premier, Giorgia Meloni. A hug instead with the vice president of the Senate Maurizio Gasparri. And then selfies and autographs in the Garibaldi room (the transatlatico of Palazzo Madama) at the end of the exhibition (also with Minister Daniela Santanché). During the performance some more courageous senators, such as Dario Damiani, also mentioned a dance, during 'Fatti mandare dalla mamma' that Morandi sang at the request, as he himself revealed, of La Russa. Even the premier hummed some songs, especially Caruso, Morandi's tribute to his friend Lucio Dalla. Guido Crosetto was spotted singing 'C'era un ragazzo' while Matteo Renzi accompanied the performance by singing and virtually playing drums on the Senate bench. "It reminded us of the good times," commented a senator with a younger colleague at the end of the concert.
