Experts speak of a turning point in the cost of heating methods using renewable energy. This is expected to come as early as 2025. Anyone who currently opts for a heat pump, which is still quite expensive, can have its purchase subsidized by the government.

Heat pumps are considered the highlight of the energy transition. They are currently in great demand, but they also cost a lot. This is set to change in just two years.

Munich - The new Building Energy Act will ban heating oil and fossil fuels from the market in a few years. If the EU's new Ecodesign Regulation comes into force, it will be even faster. This poses a cost problem for many consumers, because alternative heating methods such as heat pumps are not cheap. The good news is that heat pumps are set to become cheaper. Experts speak of a turning point in the cost of heating methods using renewable energy. This is expected to come as early as 2025.

Current costs:8,000 to 15,000 euros
Cost turnaround expected:2025

Renewable energies are becoming mandatory: This is why heat pumps are on the rise and costs are high

According to the new Building Energy Act, from January 1, 2024, every newly built heating system must be powered by at least 65 percent renewable energies. Until 2045, other heating systems with fossil fuels or heating oil may also be used, but not after that.

According to the "Building Energy Consultant Engineers Craftsmen Federal Association" (GIH), this means that many manufacturers are already expanding their production of alternatives such as heat pumps. For some, the heat pump is overrated, others believe that there is no alternative to the heat pump. The fact is, it is in demand and will soon become more affordable. Benjamin Weismann, the association's national managing director, told the Funke Media Group: "Many manufacturers should have expanded their capacities by 2025 and so many more heat pumps should roll off the assembly line at lower prices."

In addition, according to the association, more and more craftsmen are being retrained in the maintenance of heat pumps, which should reduce waiting times for installations and maintenance. According to E-Fahrer.com, this will also have a price-reducing effect on customers in the long run.

Supply and demand: Why heat pumps currently cost a lot and are difficult to deliver

Because of the new law and the general movement to save energy and become more sustainable, heat pumps are currently in great demand. However, production has not yet been expanded enough to meet the increasing demand immediately. Conversely, this means that homeowners have to wait a long time for their heat pumps. According to the Brandenburg Consumer Advice Centre, consumers wait about half a year to a whole year before the ordered heat pump can be delivered.

So demand is high, but supply is still low. This results in a handsome price that not every homeowner can or wants to pay. According to co2online GmbH, a non-profit consulting company for energy issues, the purchase of an air source heat pump currently costs between 8,000 and 16,000 euros, a geothermal heat pump 12,000 to 15,000 euros and a groundwater heat pump is priced between 9,000 and 12,000 euros.

Getting heat pumps cheaper: How subsidies reduce costs for consumers

However, anyone who currently opts for a heat pump, which is still quite expensive, can have its purchase subsidized by the government. Through the "Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings" (BEG) funding programme, money is paid out by the funding bodies BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Waste Control) and KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) for the purchase of heat pumps.

Private individuals who own a house can also apply and take advantage of support measures such as grants, loans or tax benefits. According to foerderdata.de, up to 40 percent funding is possible with the funding program.
