Highlights: Juices in the supermarket often only replenished: NDR reveals. Many juices consist only to a small extent of the fruit pictured and are often "stretched" with water and apple juice. Consumers are advised to always look at the list of ingredients, because there you can see exactly what proportion of the supposed exotic juice actually consists of these fruits or whether the product has been filled up to a large extent with Apple juice. The last ingredient in particular is often used as a filler in juices, as it is cheap and available in Germany.

If you go shopping for juice in the supermarket or discounter, you should always keep your eyes open. Because often it doesn't contain what it says on the tin. A look at the list of ingredients helps.

Fruit or vegetable juices can be found in every supermarket or discounter and are popular with customers in Germany. But you should always look closely: Because the ingredients advertised on the labels are extremely unevenly distributed. Therefore, it is worth taking a look at the list of ingredients and the distribution of ingredients. HEIDELBERG24 explains why:

Not in what it says on the tin: juice in the supermarket often refilled

Various fruit and vegetable juices are simply part of it for the German. About 30 liters are consumed annually by each citizen, they occupy the third place among the most popular non-alcoholic beverages after water and soft drinks. Statistically, about 7.5 litres per capita of orange juice in particular are drunk every year. Fortunately, juices come in different flavors and at different prices.

The beautiful colorful pictures of various fruits and vegetables on the package entice consumers to buy. Many different fruits give the impression of a high percentage of fruit. But this is usually deceptive: Many juices in the supermarket or discounter often consist only to a small extent of the fruit pictured and are often "stretched" with water and apple juice. By the way: Every year, the deceptive package of the year is chosen: in 2022 it was Rama.

Juice in the supermarket only replenished: NDR reveals

In a broadcast, the NDR took a closer look at popular juices and examined the actual proportion of the fruits depicted on the label. The products presented contained only a fraction of the advertised fruit. For example, the "Mango-Orange-Pineapple" of the Valensina brand has only one percent mango pulp, 15 percent pineapple juice - but a full 42 percent orange juice from orange juice concentrate. It is also worth taking a look at the ingredients of these products, because they could contain insects.

The remaining juice is filled up to five percent with banana pulp and 37 percent with apple juice. The last ingredient in particular is often used as a filler in juices, as it is cheap and a lot of it is available in Germany. Therefore, consumers are advised to always look at the list of ingredients, because there you can see exactly what proportion of the supposed exotic juice actually consists of these fruits or whether the product has been filled up to a large extent with apple juice.
