"Hi, I'm Jo and I bake bread", in almost every video of Jo Semola this sentence comes sooner or later. A distinctive sign – and a truth. Den Jo always shows recipes to bake on his channels on TikTok, Instagram or on the food network Starcook. One of the most popular, especially now that barbecue season is just around the corner, is his recipe for onion and potato foccaccia.

Jo lives in Cologne and in recent years has made an important decision for him: to devote himself entirely to his passion, baking bread. "I've tried and failed, I've tried, baked, improved and refined," Jo writes on his homepage. "At some point, I decided to capture my process in videos, which became a success surprisingly quickly." And what a follower: He has more than 266,000 followers on Instagram alone and almost 740,000 on TikTok.

But Jo doesn't just want to share his recipes, he also wants to share his tips. Which flour is suitable for which bread, for example, or how to freeze bread without losing its freshness. With almost 144,000 likes on TikTok, a particularly popular hack is how to get stale bread fresh again.

@jo.semola

Freshen ✌️ up the stale bread, simply hold the old bread completely under the tap for a short time and then bake it for 10-15 minutes without preheating at 180 degrees hot air. So the bread dries again, but the crust remains crispy.

The trick itself is very simple, and works not only with baguettes as shown by him, but also with rolls and other types of bread: You take the bread and let water run generously over it. It should be really wet. Then put it in the non-preheated oven on a baking rack (without baking paper). The oven is set to 180 degrees Celsius and after 15 minutes the bread is soft again and looks like fresh from the baker.

If you want to try your hand at baking bread yourself, you can try the variant without flour and oil, fluffy and fluffy "eat yourself stupid" bread or choose the quick method in five minutes.

Simple tip against food waste

In the comments there are not only compliments for the video clip, but also a few alternatives – which Jo will probably also try out at the next opportunity and test for truthfulness. Here is a small selection of the comments:

  • "Or you can just slice it thinly, put a little oil and spices on it and you have bread chips... or make breadcrumbs out of it"
  • "It's important to say that you can only do it once, after which you can finally use it as a doorstopper." 😁😅
  • "I've known the trick for years, it's helped 😁 me so many times"
  • "Have you ever tried it with milk? I think it's awesome when it comes to rolls"
  • "Just put it in the microwave with a glass of water – it's much faster"
  • "My grandfather, a master baker for over 50 years: stale bread is not hard. No bread, that's hard"
