Who would have imagined that The Exorcist would become one of the biggest receipts in the history of cinema, the first in its time? As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of William Friedkin's cult film, which founded the genre of the "exorcist film", The Vatican Exorcist is released in theaters, inspired by the life and archives of Gabriele Amorth (1), chief exorcist of the Vatican, directed by Julius Avery and played by Russell Crowe.
What attracted the Oscar-winning Gladiator actor to this role?: "The function of chief exorcist of the Vatican really exists," he says of the film in the press kit. Father Gabriele Amorth held this position for thirty-six years and participated in tens of thousands of exorcisms. I was immediately interested. When I accept a role, I like to feel the responsibility of portraying characters who have actually existed. Because we must try to restore the authenticity of this person."
