Urine against diseases and for the skin: what experts say

2023-05-09T12:15:20.530Z

Highlights: Autologous urine therapy is an ancient folk and natural medicine. The patient's own urine is said to contain active ingredients that bring the body and metabolism back into balance. Supposedly, self-urine therapy can cure hay fever after just two weeks. Doctors who practice naturopathy can probably use this method to successfully treat hay fever, asthma and allergic eczema. Some sufferers who suffer from dry skin or neurodermatitis swear by urine for external treatment. There are no studies that prove a benefit.

What some simply excrete is applied externally or even drunk by others: urine. Whether the self-urine therapy is effective against diseases and dry skin – experts give an assessment.

Urine consists of 95 percent water – the remaining five percent consists of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium or chloride ions, urea, uric acid, creatinine and fatty acids. First of all, urine is a kind of waste product of the body, which is excreted per person on average up to 1.5 liters per day. Why should you rub it on your skin, let alone drink urine, some people may ask. But autologous urine therapy is actually known worldwide and there are people who are convinced that urine can protect against diseases. Can urine actually heal the body? General practitioner Ilker-Akgün Aydin and dermatologist Dr. Uwe Schwichtenberg classify the thesis of self-urine therapy in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

Like autologous blood therapy, autologous urine therapy is an ancient folk and natural medicine. The patient's own urine is said to contain active ingredients that bring the body and metabolism back into balance. In regions of China, for example, it is customary to drink children's urine to cure illnesses. Former Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who lived to be 99 years old, is also said to have drunk a cup of his own urine every day. "Urine is a liquid excretion product. That is, there are substances in it that we basically want to get rid of. There are no studies that prove a benefit," explains Ilker-Akgün Aydin.

But what about the effect of urine against allergies and for the skin? Supposedly, self-urine therapy can cure hay fever after just two weeks. The allergy sufferer would be given his own urine orally or injected into the muscle. Doctors who practice naturopathy can probably use this method to successfully treat hay fever, asthma and allergic eczema as well as neurodermatitis.

When it comes to skin, a connection may be even more conceivable, because urea or urea is contained in many skin creams to keep them elastic and supple. Dermatologist Dr. Uwe Schwichtenberg confirms that the urea in the urine is chemically equivalent to the urea in the cream, which can ultimately promote the elasticity of the skin. Even though there are no valid studies on autologous urine therapy, some sufferers who suffer from dry skin or neurodermatitis swear by urine for external treatment.
