May 4 marks a turning point in Spotify's history. The American singer reached one billion streams with Flowers in record time.

Released on January 13 in the album Endless Summer Vacation, the song Flowers breaks all records. It spent eight non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent two consecutive weeks as Spotify's most-streamed song. On May 4, the platform recorded one billion streams on this song in no less than 112 days, a record that Spotify highlighted in an Instagram post. "Some flowers never fade," adding that the singer's track joins the "Billions club."

In the UK, the "revenge song" has become the longest-running No. 1 track for a female artist since Adele's Easy on Me in 2021, according to NME. With Flowers, Miley Cyrus now has two songs that have exceeded one billion listens, after the worldwide success of Party in the U.S.A, released in 2009. A record previously held by Harry Styles for As it was and Justin Bieber for Stay, a title released in collaboration with The kid Laroi.

Success of the revenge song

If Miley Cyrus' latest title accumulates so many listens, it is because many identify with the young woman. Flowers conveys the image of a strong and independent woman, who is recovering from a difficult breakup and learning to love herself. A "revenge song" born from the break with Liam Hemsworth, whom she had married in 2018 and with whom she had remained nearly 10 years. Nothing is left to chance: the song is released on January 13, the 33rd birthday of his ex according to Chérie FM and the clip is shot in the actor's house. A song reminiscent of Shakira's BZRP Music Sessions #53 also released in January, where she settles accounts with her ex, footballer Gérard Piqué.
