"I'm not hungry": Currywurst price in the middle of the Ruhr area causes outrage

Inflation does not stop at fast food. A currywurst with fries and a dollop of mayo in Dortmund is said to cost a whopping 9.30 euros.

Dortmund – With inflation, costs have risen in many areas of life. For example, the prices for sausage and ham in the supermarket have recently been raised several times. The Federal Statistical Office (StBA) also came to this conclusion: "Food remains the strongest price driver in April," it said in a statement. The inflation rate was 7.2 percent in April.

The higher prices are also noticeable in the catering industry. For example, a man was recently astonished when he bought a currywurst with mayo and fries in a big city in North Rhine-Westphalia. He promptly shared the price of the expensive treat on the net.

The usual size currywurst portion cost an impressive 9.30 euros. The snack was bought in the city center in Dortmund, the buyer said on Twitter. "What do you think about that?" he asked the community.

Stunned amazement followed. "Impudence! At this price, I'm not hungry!", one user could only think of it. "I wouldn't buy it," one woman commented. But snack prices also seem to have risen in other major German cities. A man recalled under the post: He recently paid 9.50 euros for a fish sandwich in Hamburg at the Landungsbrücken.

One Twitter user pointed out that snacks in Dortmund's city center "have always been immensely expensive." In this case, it is said to have been the restaurant "Der Thüringer". True, the fries were not "filled with gold threads", as one user jokingly suspected. However, the man had been invited and at least did not have to pay for the expensive currywurst himself.

In any case, the currywurst has become an integral part of the Ruhr area. But for an almost double-digit amount, consumers think twice about whether they want to grab the popular dish. This is also reflected in the restaurant's reviews on Google. Many customers seem to be disappointed by the high cost.

But how does such a price come about? "If we didn't take that, we could do it," the owner of "Der Thüringer" told Ruhr Nachrichten, explaining his pricing. Otherwise, he would not be able to keep up with the price of takeaways. The costs for food, personnel and energy have risen. Rent has also become more expensive – and that is likely to be quite a bit in Dortmund's city centre. According to the landlord, the price of the portion had been increased by around 1.50 euros. Inflation is also being felt in cafes and ice cream parlors. In Kassel, a scoop of ice cream costs almost two euros.
