"I only buy second-hand clothes, and only if necessary": Natalie Portman opens up about her vision of fashion

The Israeli-American actress shared some anecdotes about her vision of clothing that is part of her commitment to ecology.


A vegetarian since she was 9 years old, Natalie Portman has also been vegan for over ten years. And while she often shares recipes and cooking tips, extolling the merits of a diet without animal products, the actress more rarely talks about other aspects of a sustainable lifestyle, such as clothing or transport.

She did so recently in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. We discover some radical measures taken to this effect. "I haven't bought or used leather, fur or animal products in twenty years," she says, adding that she has drastically limited her purchases. "I only buy second-hand clothes, and only if absolutely necessary, and of course, I repair damaged items, like recently a handbag, rather than buying a new one." Sustainability therefore occupies a central place in the life of the 41-year-old director, who extends it within her family, also concerned by the subject. "We talk about it a lot in our homes, in terms of lifestyle, choices."

The wife of French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied explains: "When we travel, we try to organize our travel to places where we can go by train; or if we have to fly, to stay long enough to justify the trip. I use a ride-sharing app that only offers electric cars. It is a process, and it is clear that it is imperfect, but the consciousness is there. A modern lifestyle that Natalie Portman leads to the red carpets she walks regularly.
