Puddles after the rain: what to do about muddy lawns?

Highlights: After the rain, puddles form. This is quite normal, but can be uncomfortable on grass. If you take care of your lawn correctly, neither the stalks nor other plants will die from waterlogging. After the rain, puddles form. This is quite normal, but can be uncomfortable on grass. This will help you avoid damage caused by muddy meadows.

Who doesn't know it? It has rained and a huge puddle is forming in the garden, which just won't run off. And before you know it, the flower bed next to it has become a pond and the lawn is swampy.

To prevent this from happening to you, you can use a few gardener tricks. If you take care of your lawn correctly, neither the stalks nor other plants will die from waterlogging. Here's how to do it.

Condition of lawn: why grass in the garden needs a lot of water?

Grass, like most plants on this earth, needs fluid to grow and thrive. In many places, regular rain is enough to keep the meadow at the house green and juicy. In other areas, you have to blast and fertilize – if it is allowed.

Lawns are best watered when the liquid dips into the root zone of the grasses and soaks them completely. If this does not happen, the water will only be deposited in the upper layers of the soil, which means that the meadow can dry out faster and turn brown in these places. That's why, according to Mein schöner Garten, water should always be able to seep into the lawn at least 15 meters deep in order to successfully irrigate the lawn.

Too much of a good thing: That's why lawns sometimes get muddy

Anyone who thinks that you can never have enough of water is mistaken. Lawns can also be flooded, which is not always good for the grasses and, in case of doubt, can even damage the soil. In addition, it is quite unpleasant when muddy puddles form everywhere in the meadow around your own home. Such a case occurs when, for example, it rains a lot or a nearby stream overflows its banks and the water in the ground cannot drain fast enough. Then a waterlogging occurs, which forms the well-known mini-ponds on the lawn.

The reason for the puddles in the meadow may be too hard a soil. If the layers of soil are too impermeable and dense, either by hard layers of loam and clay or by many stones and thick roots, the water will not be able to drain down and will accumulate at lawn level. Holes in the lawn or low-lying areas in which the water accumulates more for purely physical reasons are also often affected by this involuntary pond formation.

As a result, all the moisture blocks the roots of the grasses, which cannot absorb oxygen and other nutrients such as nitrogen from the soil. According to the lawn woodpecker, copper, iron and zinc are also lacking in the lawn when water is overflowing. At first, the grasses turn yellow or brownish and, in case of doubt, even die completely. The same applies to flowers and other plants that are nearby in the garden and are also in the mud.

If the lawn is already muddy, the soil may need to be loosened and cleared of roots and stones that block the flow of water. According to "rasendoktor.de", the so-called aeration, i.e. the aeration of lawns, also helps to stimulate gas exchange in the soil again. The lawn can be aerated by hand with numerous fork stitches about 15 centimeters deep as well as with special garden tools.

After that, the soil can be loosened with the addition of fine sand. If you like, you can also sweep the sand into the lawn to ensure a more permeable soil. If you want to be on the safe side, you can also add a substrate from the plant shop that restores the biological balance in the lawn soil. Then muddy lawns should soon no longer be a problem.
