Peeling potatoes more easily – thanks to a trick before cooking

The best part is that you don't even need an expensive kitchen appliance for it. A sharp knife is all you needed. Here's how to do it:

  • 1. Take a raw potato and score the skin all around with a knife to create a ring-shaped incision in the skin. As a result, the potato is divided in half. Caution: Do not cut too deeply. Try to hit the beginning of the cut as accurately as possible.
  • 2. Repeat the process with all the other potatoes that will be cooked.
  • 3. Cook the potatoes normally in a pot of hot water.
  • 4. Fill a second pot with cold water.
  • 5. Now rinse the fully cooked, hot potatoes in the cold water. Now the carved line is clearly visible, as the shell peels off around the cut.
  • 6. Simply peel off the two halves of the shell with your fingers. Thanks to the incision, the peel is wonderfully easy to remove.
  • 7. If the potatoes get too cold because of the water bath, you can simply put them back into the warm water. Your perfectly peeled jacket potatoes are ready.

What is the difference between jacket potatoes and boiled potatoes?

If potatoes are first boiled and then peeled as described above, they are jacket potatoes. Boiled potatoes, in turn, are peeled before cooking and then cooked in salted water. Jacket potatoes not only have a more intense taste, but are also more nutritious than boiled potatoes. Due to the shell, fewer vitamins and nutrients pass into the cooking water during the cooking process. Because peeling raw potatoes is much easier, many people still prefer to cook boiled potatoes.
