Highlights: Pentagon leaks paint a Zelensky with an "aggressive" instinct. The Kiev leader "earned the trust of Western governments by refusing to use the weapons he was given to strike Russia at home," writes the Washington Post. The secret papers refer to some meetings of recent months. In mid-February, meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Yuliya Svrydenko, Zelenski suggested that Ukraine "blow up" the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline that supplies oil to Hungary.

Volodymyr Zelensky wanted to strike Russia within its borders. The Washington Post reports some Pentagon leaks that paint a Zelensky with an "aggressive" instinct, very different from that image of a "calm and stoic man facing the brutal" Russian invasion.
The Kiev leader "earned the trust of Western governments by refusing to use the weapons he was given to strike Russia at home, but privately proposed a much bolder direction," writes the Washington Post, quoting some of the hypotheses put forward by Zelensky. These include "the occupation of villages in Russia to gain more leverage over Moscow, the bombing of a pipeline transporting oil from Russia to Hungary and the use of long-range missiles to hit Russia on its borders."
The secret papers refer to some meetings of recent months. In one at the end of January, Zelensky suggested that Kiev conduct "attacks on Russia" as ground troops entered enemy territory and "occupied unspecified Russian border towns," one of the documents branded as top secret read. A move that was aimed at allowing "Kiev to gain more leverage in discussions with Moscow".
In another meeting in February with General Valery Zaluzhny, Zelensky expressed his "concern" that Ukraine did not have "long-range missiles capable of reaching Russian troop deployments in Russia." The Ukrainian president then "suggested attacking some locations in Rostov," a region of western Russia, using drones. In mid-February, meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Yuliya Svrydenko, Zelensky suggested that Ukraine "blow up" the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline that supplies oil to Hungary. A "threat", according to American intelligence, meaningless: Zelensky was "expressing his anger towards Hungary" and probably indulged in "hyperbolic and senseless threats", is reported in one of the documents cited by the Washington Post.
