Weeding by hand is all well and good. However, special gardening tools make the work much easier and are often much more effective.

Some problems have to be tackled at their roots. These include, for example, the dandelion. Its deep taproots sit so stubbornly firmly in the ground that you won't get far with pure manual work. A suitable tool is helpful here. But weeds such as nettles and goutweed can also be removed more sustainably and without chemicals with suitable equipment.

There are a few basic rules to control the weeds: You should remove the weeds as early as possible in their growing season before they can spread via seeds or runners. Root weeds such as dandelion, sorrel, goutweed or bindweed must be thoroughly removed with roots, otherwise they will spread quickly again. In addition, regularity is important, especially after a rain shower, weeds like all greens begin to sprout again.

Weeding is faster and easier with the following garden tools:

  • The cultivator: Three prongs help loosen the soil so that stuck roots are easily detached from the soil.
  • The sow's tooth: The hook tip, like grout scrapers or knives, is ideal for weeds that have nested between paving stones and grooves.
  • The pull hoe: Available in short and long versions. It is well suited for shallow-rooted plants that are easy to peel off with its sharp blade.
  • The dandelion puller: If you have a lot of it in your garden, it's worth buying. Like a corkscrew, the winch screws itself into the ground and grabs the evil at the root.
  • The weeder: A back-friendly alternative with a long rod and steel claws, with which you can also keep your distance from prickly thistles and nettles. The garden claw, which also loosens the soil, works in a very similar way.

It is easier to weed if the soil is slightly moist or if you loosen the soil beforehand with a digging fork. Especially in the case of root weeds, care should be taken to remove them completely from the bed or lawn.
