Better than DB Navigator? Travellers should take a look at alternative rail apps

2023-05-17T04:51:22.061Z

Highlights: The DB Navigator is used by millions of rail passengers. However, an alternative rail app is supposed to be even better. The "Railway: Timetable and Live Tracking" should do a lot better, says chip.de. According to Deutsche Bahn, the old system is not expected to be withdrawn from the market until the first quarter of 2024. The only disadvantage so far: the transfer of tickets from one app to the other is currently not possible. The 50-hour strike could be averted but it will probably not run on the rails at the beginning of the week.

The DB Navigator is used by millions of rail passengers. However, an alternative rail app is supposed to be even better. Everything you need to know about the app alternative.

Munich – The DB Navigator app offers many advantages for rail passengers: from paperless ticket booking, best price search, up-to-date wagon sequence, capacity utilization information to convenience check-in and travel notifications.

According to the technology portal chip.de, however, the app alternative "Train: Timetable and Live Tracking" should do a lot better. We have summarised below why it is worth taking a look at the alternative rail app.

Alternative train app: This is what makes the "Railway: Timetable and Live Tracking" better than the DB Navigator

As the portal writes, the "Bahn: Timetable and Live Tracking", which is available as an Android and iOS app as well as a web app, is an unofficial alternative to the well-known DB Navigator. chip.de rates the app alternative as "Good". The following features are better:

  • Timetable
  • Connections: With just a few clicks you get an overview of all trains, transfers and, if necessary, footpaths. Suitable train connections can be saved as favorites and always kept in view. Departure boards show which trains depart next from the station.
  • Accurate, real-time information: This means that travellers are always up to date. All stops of the train are displayed with the corresponding times, track numbers and additional information on delays, disruptions and cancellations. A map view shows the route, all stations and the approximate location of the train.
  • Useful utilization forecasts: The load forecast is particularly practical because it shows the current and predicted utilization of the trains. This allows you to decide in advance whether you should reserve a seat or choose another connection.
  • Wagon sequence or live tracking: The car sequence can be viewed in the app. This is very helpful because you can go directly to the section on the platform where the car with the reserved seat will stop.
  • Brand new: Deutschlandticket filter – this allows users of the 49-euro ticket to find the best possible journeys from local and regional transport that are actually included in the Deutschlandticket.

Commuters, frequent passengers and employees of Deutsche Bahn (DB) also benefit from useful additional information such as DB lounges, train types and location information.

New DB app: DB Navigator will be replaced by a successor app in 2024

As is already known, the DB Navigator is to be replaced by an app successor, the "Next DB Navigator". This is already available in the App Store and the new functions and improvements can be tried out and used in advance by rail customers. According to Deutsche Bahn, the old system is not expected to be withdrawn from the market until the first quarter of 2024.

According to the transport company, the design and user interface of the new app successor has been optimized. More new features will be added gradually. In direct comparison with the classic DB Navigator, the Next DB Navigator also convinces with faster access to your own profile and important information and timetable changes, according to chip.de. The only disadvantage so far: the transfer of tickets from one app to the other is currently not possible.

DB sells its tickets via many channels: online via the website or via app, at ticket machines or in the classic way in the travel centre. However, DB is abolishing a sales service after 25 years. The cancelled strike on the rails has provided relief. The 50-hour strike at Deutsche Bahn could be averted, but it will probably not run smoothly on the platforms at the beginning of the week (May 15). (Vivian Werg)
