Unemployment: is there really "nothing to shout cocorico", as Sophie Binet believes?

2023-05-17T17:17:45.849Z

Highlights: At 7.1%, the unemployment rate is at its lowest in 40 years. "This is a decline that is taking place in all countries of the world, and the France remains above the European average," says Sophie Binet. "When I look at myself, when I compare myself, I feel sorry... Sorry too?" says Bruno Le Maire, the CGT's chief executive. "The results of our economic and fiscal policy since 2017 are there," says Olivier Dussopt.

THE VERIFICATION - If the executive boasted of an unemployment rate at the lowest since 1982, the boss of the CGT preferred to see the glass half full. Rightly?

When I look at myself, I feel sorry, when I compare myself, I feel sorry... Sorry too? Published this Wednesday morning, the unemployment figures made it possible to note the good shape of the French labor market. At 7.1%, the unemployment rate is at its lowest in 40 years, a success that the executive was quick to boast. "The results of our economic and fiscal policy since 2017 are there," welcomed Bruno Le Maire, when his colleague Olivier Dussopt estimated that "our efforts to achieve the Objective of Full Employment are reflected in these figures".

But are these words just bluster? Invited on France Inter, Wednesday morning, the boss of the CGT delivered a completely different analysis, much more measured. "This is a decline that is taking place in all countries of the world, and the France remains above the European average. So, there is nothing to shout cocorico, "said Sophie Binet, preferring to see the glass half empty.
