When the toilet becomes clogged, joy arises – not only because the next visit to the toilet is not secured. Many people simply don't know how to help themselves in such moments other than to flush again and again and thus possibly cause the toilet bowl to overflow. A poop, i.e. a suction cup, is the easiest, fastest and most environmentally friendly method of unclogging at such moments. However, if you don't have one in the house, you can also use a simple trick. All you need is an old plastic bottle.

Whether it's cola (which, by the way, can remove urine scale in the toilet), soda or water: a large PET bottle can be found in almost every household. Once the plastic bottle has been emptied, it is ideal as a substitute for Pömpel - and the water in the toilet bowl will soon drain off again. But even with a clogged siphon, a PET bottle can work wonders.

It is best to get the excess toilet paper out of the toilet bowl beforehand with the help of household gloves and throw it in the trash can. Then you're ready to go. Here's how the trick works:

  • Have a large, empty PET bottle (1.5 litres) ready.
  • Unscrew the bottle cap.
  • Then use scissors or a cutter knife to cut off the bottom of the bottle.
  • Insert the bottle into the clogged drain pipe with the cut side and start pumping – that is, moving the bottle up and down. This creates a negative pressure that pulls dirt, toilet paper and the like upwards and thus loosens the blockage.
  • The stagnant water in the toilet bowl can now drain off unhindered again.

What home remedies help with clogged toilets

In addition to PET bottles and pots, natural home remedies also help to relieve blockages in the toilet. However, this will take a little more time. Vinegar and baking soda need to soak about overnight. After that, the water in the toilet should drain freely again.
