Against the backdrop of the writers' strike in Hollywood and in the shadow of the press conference held last night, in which real concern was expressed for the future of quite a few productions, another difficult news for viewers: Seth MacFarlane, creator of the beloved series "Family Guy" and "American Dad," announces his retirement.

According to Deadline, which was the first to publish the news, MacFarlane, along with his co-producers Brian Boyle, Matt Weitzman, Rich Apple and Alec Sulkin, made it clear to 20th Century Studios executives this week that they have no intention of continuing to work on the hit series as long as the strike continues.
Since the strike began earlier this month, MacFarlane, 49, has taken an active part in it and has been seen joining the protesters, which is not surprising considering that MacFarlane also took part in the great writers' strike of 2007.

Despite the dramatic announcement, as of now, the move will not immediately affect the two successful series. As far as Family Guy is concerned, MacFarlane has ended his professional commitments for the 21st season, which ended its May 7 run after 20 episodes, while as far as "American Dad," which began airing its 20th season in early March, still has enough episodes left to allow it to run for at least another three months, it has been learned.
