The EU Commission has approved the deal between Microsoft and Activision. Call of Duty is not as important as Sony claims. This caused laughter among fans.

Hamburg – Microsoft wants to buy Activision in the biggest deal in gaming history. Sony criticized the whole thing in front of the competition watchdogs, fearing that Call of Duty would then only run on the Xbox Series X and subsequent Microsoft consoles, instead of also on the PS5 and PS6. The EU Commission said "Call of Duty is not as important as Sony pretends to be" and made gamers laugh.

EU waves through Microsoft-Activision deal – "CoD is not as important as Sony pretends to be"

The EU allows the Microsoft-Activision deal: On May 15, the EU Commission made the decision on the planned Microsoft-Activision deal. The purchase was nodded off after Microsoft made concessions on some critical points. The biggest point of contention was licenses in cloud gaming. Microsoft agreed to award the cloud licenses for all Activision games to competitors as well. Even before that, the company made a deal that brings Call of Duty to the Nintendo Switch.

What is cloud gaming?

With cloud gaming, the games do not run on your own hardware, but on an external server. From there, they are streamed to your own device. In the long term, this is intended to break hardware barriers, for example, because even low-performance devices can play high-resolution games. Microsoft already has a strong offering in terms of cloud gaming with Game Pass for Xbox and PC.

Call of Duty is not important: Sony lamented the possible loss of Call of Duty because of the deal. Microsoft itself described CoD as "not a must-have title". The EU Commission agrees with this. The statement said that Microsoft might have no interest in removing Call of Duty from the PlayStation because they sold four times as many as Xbox consoles.

Even if Microsoft were to remove Activision's games from the PlayStation, it wouldn't hurt competition in the console market.

EU Commission on the Microsoft-Activision deal

"Even though Call of Duty is mainly played on consoles, it is less popular in the European Economic Area (EEA) than in other regions of the world, and is less popular in its genre compared to other markets in the EEA. [...] Sony could easily use its size, large catalog of games and its own market position to intercept any attempt to weaken competitiveness."

For fans of Call of Duty, the verdict causes laughter. Warzone 2 is so unpopular that many streamers and professionals prefer to play its predecessor. One user on Twitter took the EU's verdict with humor, commenting "Damn, even the EU says 'the game is dead' lol".

Britain has banned the deal: The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have both rejected the deal. However, Microsoft announced that it would appeal in both cases. It remains to be seen whether the purchase of Activision Blizzard will still take place.
