Again and again, traffic signs appear, the meaning of which motorists puzzle over. Since 1988 there has been a sign with orange "egg" on waves.
Munich – Traffic signs are usually extremely useful, as they clearly and unambiguously indicate the applicable rules in certain areas. They serve as a guidance system and guide us safely to our destination, even if navigation devices or smartphones fail to work. Even if many do not behave properly even with well-known signs and there is a risk of high fines.
And there are signs that cause motorists to swerve, even if the traffic signs have long been part of the street scene. This also includes the orange "egg" on waves.

Road sign with orange "egg" on waves confuses motorists – this is what it means
A comparatively new addition to Germany in April 2020 was a traffic sign in which motorists are threatened with high fines for disregard – the orange "egg" on waves, on the other hand, has been seen on roads in Germany since 1988. The relatively similar predecessor of this traffic sign has even been on the road since 1971. But what exactly does the ominous traffic sign mean?
Absolute ban on vehicles with a certain load: road signs with an "egg" on waves
Even if it is difficult to see at first glance. At the top, the traffic sign shows the black and orange hazard symbol of a tanker and below it two blue wavy lines as a water symbol. This important regulatory sign means: Vehicles with water-polluting cargo are prohibited! The sign 269 of the German traffic sign catalogue specifically signals: Vehicle owners who carry more than 20 litres of a water-polluting load with them are prohibited from continuing their journey.
Substances hazardous to water are usually:
- Acids
- Leach
- Alkali metals
- Mineral oils
- Halogens
- Lead salts

The sign is one of the so-called prescriptive signs, which, like the sign with the identification number 277.1, are marked with a red ring. With these signs, you almost always have to reckon with fines - this is especially true if a hazard or even an accident with property damage or personal injury could follow the disregard of the sign.

It can also be really expensive if you disregard the "water protection area" traffic sign 269: Up to 250 euros are called if vehicle owners violate this ban. It does not matter which substances are involved.
Drivers always have problems with traffic signs that hardly anyone knows – such as the halved car with four figures. Especially on the motorway, there are often signs whose meaning is unclear. This also includes the white arrows with the line.
