(ANSA) - HIROSHIMA, 22 MAY - US President Joe Biden said he expected "a very short thaw with China", during the press conference at the end of the G7 in Hiroshima.
The US president also assured that there is no change on Taiwan regarding the "'One China' policy.
What we do not accept" are changes in the status quo with the use of force. "We call on all parties to resolve issues by peaceful means," Biden told a news conference. "Nor do we expect Taiwan to declare its independence," he added.
A senior US administration official said at a G7 briefing that Beijing "could absolutely play a role" in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and it is "positive that President Xi (Jinping) spoke to Zelensky" and "appointed a special envoy for this purpose."
"We hope that China will use its influence on Putin to encourage him to stop this war... based on what he feels and sees here in Hiroshima," he noted, noting that Xi is one of the "few foreign leaders" capable of influencing the tsar. "And certainly, to the extent that they remain interested in a peace proposal, another thing that we hope they will benefit from is that the G7 leaders also want to see peace. We want to see an end to the war. Unless it ends with the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, there is certainly utility in a credible, sustainable and meaningful peace proposal."
"We encourage them to continue to avail themselves of Ukrainian perspectives here. And if that could lead to some sort of credible peace proposal that President Zelensky could support, we would say that everything is fine," he concluded. (ANSA).
