ATHENS - According to the first exit polls on the elections in Greece, polls released by the ERT broadcaster, the party of New Democracy of outgoing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is given between 40 and 36%. Syriza, the party of Alexis Tsipras, is between 29 and 35%. PASOK, the third political force, is given between 12.5 and 9.5%.
Almost 10 million citizens are called to the polls to choose the new government. The latest polls give the outgoing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, head of the conservative party of Nea Dimokratia, in the lead, with a percentage of votes around 35-38% and a gap of 5-7 points on the main rival Syriza. But among the ranks of the main party of the Greek left there is cautious optimism: 438 thousand young people between 17 and 21 years old are called to vote, and overall the percentage of undecided is around 10%. A basin from which opposition leader Alexis Tsipras hopes to be able to draw to catch up with his rival and thus try to form a progressive coalition government with the other parties, including the socialist PASOK, the third political force in the country that, according to forecasts, could obtain 10% of the votes.
Voter turnout has so far stood at 31%, the Interior Ministry announced. The figure concerns 80% of polling stations. Voting takes place until 19:00 local time (18:00 in Italy).
