(ANSA) - ROME, 21 MAY - Italy has activated the EU civil protection mechanism to request, in particular, high-capacity pumping equipment. Following the request, Brussels "mobilised bids from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia to help the Italian authorities cope with heavy flooding" in Emilia-Romagna. "The European Emergency Response Coordination Centre has been in constant contact with the Italian authorities, who are currently evaluating the offers, the EU stands ready to provide further help if needed."
The EU's Copernicus service also provided emergency satellite mapping of the affected areas, following a request from Italy's civil protection on 16 May. (ANSA).
