Harvesting herbal tea from the balcony - the eight best varieties for the flower box

2023-05-21T07:09:27.634Z

Highlights: Some drink herbal tea only when they are sick in order to use the effects as medicinal plants. Fresh herb leaves and flowers often have such an intense aroma that they even cut a fine figure as a summer drink when drunk cold. If you haven't harvested everything in the course of the summer, you can harvest and dry most of the herbs in early autumn with a radical pruning - so nothing stands in the way of a winter hot tea from your own cultivation. If possible, a single pot is a good idea.

Do you love herbal tea? A small, fine selection of herbs can also be grown very well on the balcony and enjoyed freshly picked as a drink.

Some drink herbal tea only when they are sick in order to use the effects as medicinal plants. It's a shame, really. Fresh herb leaves and flowers often have such an intense aroma that they even cut a fine figure as a summer drink when drunk cold. Just to save yourself the trip to the supermarket, the extension on the balcony or terrace is worthwhile.

When growing the herbs, you should make sure that the plants have the same or at least similar requirements for location and care. For example, Mediterranean herbs such as thyme, lavender and sage can be planted well in a box, as they appreciate a rather sandy soil. Lemon balm harmonizes well with all planting partners. You should be a little careful with mint, as the plant spreads strongly underground and the roots can quickly run through the entire flower box. If possible, a single pot is a good idea here.

These tea herbs are well suited for growing on the balcony:

  • Lemon balm
  • Mint (e.g. peppermint or Moroccan mint)
  • Sage
  • Camomile
  • Lavender
  • Wild mallow
  • Verbena (e.g. lemon or orange verbena)
  • Thyme

Don't be shy about harvesting: Harvested correctly, the herbs appreciate pruning very much and sprout all the more strongly, so that you can harvest continuously throughout the year. In order to take all the aroma with you, the time of harvest is crucial. The ideal moment for this is just before or during flowering, in the morning or at 11 o'clock in the morning, as this is when the proportion of essential oils is highest.
