In which cities are residents abandoning, and where are they moving? An analysis of data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, carried out by Eldar Marketing, shows that the city of Jerusalem, which just two days ago celebrated its 56th anniversary of liberation, continues to lead the table of cities with the highest negative internal migration balance among localities in Israel.

It also emerges that in 2022, a net 15,855 residents left Jerusalem (incoming less outgoing), placing Jerusalem at the top of the negative ranking. The city also leads the negative migration balance in the first quarter of 2023.

Central Bureau of Statistics data also show that Tel Aviv ranks second among cities in Israel in the negative migration balance, with 7,552 net residents who left the city in 2022. In third place in the negative migration balance is the city of Ashdod, with 4,768 net residents who left; In fourth place is Bnei Brak with 2,695 net residents who left the city in the past year. In fifth place was Haifa with 1,771 net residents who left.

In the second five, the cities of Beitar Illit (negative balance of -1,752), Bat Yam (-1,702), Be'er Sheva (-1,389), Holon (-1,341) and Petah Tikva (-1,163) are ranked in the second five.

Where have residents moved in 2022?

On the other hand, the cities with the positive internal migration balance in 2022 are Beit Shemesh with 7,428 net residents who entered the city; Harish is placed second in the positive ranking with 5210 net residents entering the city; Netivot is in third place with 3,042 net residents who entered it in 2022.

In fourth place is Kiryat Gat with 2,569 net residents who entered - apparently due to the massive development of the city and the construction of the new neighborhoods of Carmei Gat and Carmei Park as part of the umbrella agreements with the state. In fifth place is the city of Yavneh with 1,767 net residents who entered. Yavne is also one of the developing cities in Israel and new neighborhoods are being built that attract a new population.

In the second five in the positive ranking are the cities of Herzliya with 1,751 net residents who entered; Sderot with 1,708, Tirat Carmel with 1,504, Or Yehuda with 1,473 and Afula with 1,344 net residents who entered in 2022.

The Central Bureau of Statistics immigration data for 2022 and the first quarter are provisional data published on the Central Bureau of Statistics website and are based on a statistical estimate, while the official data for 2022 will be published only in October of this year, and will be based on an accurate count of the population registry.

The Central Bureau of Statistics updates provisional data quarterly, in order to shed light on the migration situation in Israel's main cities.

Roni Cohen, CEO of Eldar Marketing, which analyzed the analysis, explains, "As for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the high prices of apartments in these cities make them unaffordable for many young people and they move to other cities to try their luck. In Jerusalem, some of those who leave are secular and the city's religious-ultra-Orthodox character is less suitable, and if they are ultra-Orthodox, they move to other cities with similar population centers, but at cheaper housing prices."
