In northern Italy, numerous rivers have burst their banks. Villages had to be evacuated, roads and beaches were closed. As a holidaymaker, can you cancel your trip now?

Bologna – Italy is drowning in the floods. After a severe drought, storms swept over the Mediterranean country again at the beginning of the week. The previously dry soil could hardly absorb water. As a result, almost two dozen rivers burst their banks, 36 cities and towns were flooded, there were landslides and deaths. According to Stefano Bonaccini, president of the Emilia-Romagna region, the extent of the devastation is similar to that of an earthquake. An overview of the situation and what tourists should be aware of at the moment.

Severe weather in Italy: Which regions are affected?

The Emilia-Romagna region was hit particularly hard by the floods. These include the cities of Cesena, Faenza and Senigallia, but also Riccione and Rimini. In the popular resort town of Ravenna, the three villages of Villanova di Ravenna, Filetto and Roncalceci had to be evacuated on Thursday (18 May) after the Lamone River burst its banks.

In Bologna, some districts were under water. Several roads in the north of the city were closed. In addition to the Emilia-Romagna region, the Federal Foreign Office also warns against travel to Sicily. In both areas, the alert level is red. In the interior of the country, there is above all "the risk of flooding and landslides," it says. In South Tyrol, a rock crashed into the terrace of a kindergarten during storms.

Italy: Restrictions after severe weather – closed roads and Adriatic beaches

The Federal Foreign Office also warns that storm surges may occur along the entire coast, including in central and southern Italy. As a result of the already "dangerously high waves", the beaches in the municipalities of Ravenna and Cervia are currently closed.

  • Overview of the situation in Italy:
  • Warning from the Federal Foreign Office against travelling to the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Sicily
  • Inland floods and landslides: especially Cesena, Bologna Faenza, Senigallia, Riccione, Rimini, Ravenna
  • Storm surges near the coast (also central and southern Italy)
  • Closed beaches: Ravenna and Cervia

In addition, after the landslides, many roads are also impassable, according to the Foreign Office. There are currently still roadblocks, especially around Bologna, autostrade.it shows. Regional train services in the Emilia-Romagna region are currently completely suspended. Many high-speed and intercity trains run slower than usual, informs the ADAC. On Thursday, the power supply was also still restricted. 27,000 people in the affected area were left without electricity.

Severe weather in Italy: these are the rights and recommendations for holidaymakers

In view of the storms, the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel advisory on "extreme weather". The recommendations to local holidaymakers are to follow the current situation on local and social media. In addition, "prohibitions, signs and warnings" should always be observed and "instructions from local authorities should be followed".

But what if you don't make the trip at all due to the storms? If there is an official travel warning from the Foreign Office, trips can be cancelled without any problems, informs the ADAC. In the case of Italy, however, it is only a travel advisor so far.

Nevertheless, there are chances of free cancellation. If, in the case of package holidays, extraordinary circumstances arise that significantly affect the holiday, it may be cancelled or interrupted. Flooding is one of these circumstances if "there is a considerable probability that there will be a risk to life and limb during the trip," according to the ADAC. The flood must therefore be "directly at the holiday destination", according to the ADAC. Similar rules apply to individual travel. The individual services can be terminated if the flooding makes the trip impossible. All the latest developments around the storm in Italy can be found in the news ticker. (chd/dpa)
