A lack of soft skills is a common cause of job rejections. If you have a very unflattering application photo on your CV, you are more likely to be rejected than someone with a professionally taken picture. It is difficult to check the presence of these skills only on the basis of an application folder. Prejudices against people with a migrant background are also relevant.

Job rejections are frustrating and demotivating for applicants. However, there are five reasons that may be the reason for failure.

According to a recent study by ManpowerGroup (MPG), almost 2023 out of 4 employers report difficulties in finding talent and skilled workers in 5. This would correspond to an increase of two percent and more than a doubling compared to 2010, according to MPG. In addition to a lack of soft skills (character traits, behaviors, characteristics), there are also other reasons why positive feedback does not come back.

It may sound paradoxical that, despite a general shortage of skilled workers, many applicants are receiving rejections.

According to arbeits-abc.de, this is due to the following reasons:

  • Lack of soft skills: Adaptability, reliability, ability to work in a team, analytical thinking and leadership qualities are human strengths that are most in demand, according to the MPG. However, it is difficult to check the presence of these skills only on the basis of an application folder.
  • Applicants do not fit the job profile: With a purely humanities degree, it is difficult to get started in marketing. In general, a lack of qualifications is an issue, even if some companies are open to this and it is possible to gradually work your way up as an employee.
  • Lack of sympathy: Openness, honesty and politeness are very popular with companies. If there is no sympathy, someone else gets the job.
  • Bad application photo: If you have a very unflattering application photo on your CV, you are more likely to be rejected than someone with a professionally taken picture.
  • Migration background: Prejudices against people with a migrant background are also relevant. According to Indeed, 53 percent of people looking for a job with a migrant background are sure they are at a disadvantage when looking for a job.
