It could be so beautiful: balmy summer nights when you can relax from the stress of everyday life in the garden or on the balcony. But when the idyll is destroyed by a buzzing and humming, it is more than annoying. However, mosquitoes and other insects can be deterred with special candles, but also by other means.

Mosquitoes are unavoidable in summer, because the animals multiply particularly strongly as soon as the temperatures rise. If it has rained for a long time before, this favors the mosquito season. Even though there are virtually no mosquitoes in this country that transmit diseases, such a bite itches and burns and can become inflamed under certain circumstances.
Special scented candles containing essential oils are touted as the ultimate remedy in the fight against the pesky insects. However, these are only effective in the immediate vicinity of the candle. The further away you are from it, the more likely it is that you will still be the victim of a mosquito attack. That's why it's a good idea to look for effective alternatives:
- Avoid watering holes: Puddles or other water accumulations are the perfect place for mosquitoes. They lay eggs there. You should also avoid leaves lying around or empty flower pots, because rainwater also collects there.
- Take precautions: If you have a pond, you can fight mosquito larvae there with a little cooking oil. Plants such as lavender, catnip or lemon balm near the pond also prevent the mosquitoes from laying eggs there. In the case of bird baths, you should change the water every few days so that mosquitoes do not multiply there.
- Set up a fan: According to Consumer Reports, placing a fan outside reduces the chance of a mosquito landing on your skin by 45 to 65 percent.
