Highlights: Exposure to cold temperatures in the morning may help burn more fat, but especially in men. Study focused on how exposure to cold stimulates the burning of brown fat tissue or brown fat for temperature regulation and calorie burning. Brown fat is a type of body fat that helps regulate body temperature which is activated just before a person feels the chills at a cold temperature. The researchers also speculated whether fat burning tracks internal body rhythms and how the pattern differs in men and women. The findings were presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Dublin this week.

The Israeli summer may be here, but you can think of some creative ways to cool down in the morning, because according to a new study, men who want to lose weight should be exposed to cold in the morning because it may help them increase fat burning. The researchers behind the study learned that while men are more likely to burn fat when exposed to cold temperatures in the morning than in the evening, this is not the case for women.

The study focused on how exposure to cold stimulates the burning of brown fat tissue or brown fat for temperature regulation and calorie burning. Brown fat is a type of body fat that helps regulate body temperature which is activated just before a person feels the chills at a cold temperature.

The researchers also speculated whether fat burning tracks internal body rhythms and how the pattern differs in men and women. The findings were presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Dublin, Ireland this week.

"Our study suggests that there is an optimal time to undergo cold exposure at a specific point in the body's 24-hour cycle," said study author Maria Boone of Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands. "There may also be a sex difference in how the body responds to cold exposure in relation to increasing metabolism at a certain point in time, and it appears that providing morning cold exposure treatments may be more beneficial for men," Boone added.

In a preliminary study conducted in mice, researchers found that the metabolic activity of brown fat changes throughout the day. The activity peaks just before waking up when the body needs to raise the core temperature, which drops at night.

The researchers then evaluated 24 thin participants made up of men and women between the ages of 18 and 31. During the assessment, participants lay on mattresses filled with water that gradually cooled until the temperature reached -8°C or when they felt chills. They were exposed to steady cold for 90 minutes afterwards, their energy expenditure and skin temperatures were measured.

The researchers found that men had significant differences in the morning while the energy expenditure caused by cold and skin temperature was not much different between morning and evening in women.

The researchers believe that the study is "an important first step in investigating the effects of circadian rhythm on the effects of exposure to cold on metabolism (fat). Meanwhile, they are trying to investigate whether repeated bouts of morning cold exposure can improve cardiovascular health in obese men.

"At a minimum, our findings suggest that interventions should be considered at specific times when targeting lipid metabolism," Boone added
