Aldi revolution – discounter launches delivery service for the first time

2023-05-24T04:00:03.703Z

Highlights: Aldi Süd will also be launching a delivery service for the first time from June 2023. The delivery service will initially be tested in the main area around the Mülheim headquarters. The service will be available to all customers in the quarter after the test phase in June. Although the prices are to be charged as from the stationary business, a delivery fee is expected to be charge in order to realize this. The food is then delivered via electric delivery vehicles. For deliveries, customers have to opt for a fixed time slot.

Aldi is venturing into the delivery business. Soon, the discounter's groceries will be conveniently brought to the door.

Dortmund – Who doesn't know it? It took longer in the office, after which it's straight on to the next appointment or sports class. Going shopping can fall by the wayside between work and leisure. Logically, the online food retail business is booming. Now discounter Aldi is also jumping on the bandwagon, as RUHR24 reports.

Aldi revolution – discounter launches delivery service for the first time

Food at the click of a button in the app: The offer is by no means new. Either commodity-specific, as in the case of Flaschenpost, or an all-round blow, as in the case of the online food suppliers Getir, Flink or Wolt, for example. Stores are also already offering delivery services – for example, Rewe has had an online delivery and click & collect offer in its range for some time.

Aldi Süd will also be launching a delivery service for the first time from June 2023. However, the discounter is gradually approaching the new terrain. For example, the delivery service will initially be tested in the main area around the Mülheim headquarters. In addition, the offer will initially be reserved for employees, as the Lebensmittelzeitung first reported.

Aldi launches delivery service in June – but limited

1300 items, including frozen products, refrigerated items and dry goods, belong to the online range. Although the prices are to be charged as from the stationary business, a delivery fee is expected to be charged in order to realize this. The food is then delivered via electric delivery vehicles. For deliveries, customers have to opt for a fixed time slot.

Although the project is to be made available to all Mülheim customers in the quarter after the test phase in June, Aldi is already dampening expectations. According to the Lebensmittelzeitung, no provider has yet earned money with online delivery services. Aldi Süd is also realistic about the test phase: "When it comes to test runs, the following always applies: Not every one of these projects makes it beyond the test phase. This also includes examples from Aldi Süd, such as the test run with Infarm."

But the fact that the discounter dares to take the step and tries it out is like a revolution. For a long time, it had been discussed at Aldi Süd. Now the debates seem to be bearing fruit. However, whether the model has future prospects, let alone be rolled out throughout the Aldi Süd area, will only become clear after the test phase.
