The Cameri Theater presented today (Wednesday) its new repertoire for 2023-2024 and the new actors who will join its ranks, Yaniv Biton, Oz Zehavi, Meshi Kleinstein, Efrat Ben Tzur and musician Nono.

Alongside the plays that will be staged, the theater also announced a new intriguing project, "Our Next Musical". This is a call for proposals for musicals creators for 2024, in which the theater will provide for the first time a budget for development and professional accompaniment.

So what's in store for us this year at Camry? Among all the world classics, modern playwrights and original Israeli theater, here are some particularly intriguing productions:

Towards the end of 2023 – and for the first time in Israel – the second part of Angels in America, the masterpiece set at the height of the AIDS epidemic in New York in the late 80s, will premiere. The first part of the play opened in the theater a few months ago and became one of his biggest hits. The Cameri Theater plans to turn this into a real theatrical event, and allow the audience to come and watch both parts on the same evening - that is, a play that lasts about 7 hours, not an easy challenge for the Israeli viewer, but a real treat for fans of the genre.

Another intriguing play is "The King is Going to Die", a new adaptation of a play by Eugène Ionesco, directed by Irad Rubinstein, about the days of greatness of King Berenger who clings to life and the throne with all his might and refuses to embark on the last, inevitable journey. Among the participants: Rami Baruch, Keren Mor, Neta Gerti, Micha Selector, Aya Granit Sheba, Matan On Yami. In a presentation to the media, it was hard not to notice the relevance of the adaptation to our times, the challenge to the regime and the attempt to deal with the ills of Israeli society in 2023.

Among the intriguing classics that will also come to the stage in modern adaptations are Medea - Shahar Pinkas's adaptation of Euripides' classics directed by Irad Rubinstein and an adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Kaiser, played by Amos Tamam. Another adaptation of a classic play, this time our own, will be for foreigners, the play by Yehoshua Sobol, adapted by Guy Ben-Aharon and Dror Keren.

A new name in the Cameri Theater is Nono (Naomi Aharoni Gal), who will come for the first time to make music for the theater for a play called "Kaffot" - a comedy-drama that shatters ethos about growing up, friendship and love, and about how the most beautiful emotion can cause us to do the ugliest acts. The play was written by Gitit Fischer and Shir Reuven.

Three films will be adapted to the stage in three intriguing productions: Rain Man, a touching comedy by Dan Gordon based on an MGM film; Force Majeure, Tim Price's adaptation of Swedish director Ruben Östlund's hit film ("The Square", "Triangle of Sadness"); And Eliminate the Old Lady – based on the successful 1955 film, which was revived by the Coen Brothers in 2004.

And it is impossible without the genre of beloved musicals. For the first time, the musical "Waitress", which tells the story of Jenna, a young waitress specializing in making pie in a small remote town, who gets a new taste for her life when a young doctor arrives in town, and Dear Evan Hansen, an award-winning musical (including six Tony Awards), about a high school student who suffers social ostracism and becomes embroiled in lies in front of the parents of a boy from his class who commits suicide.

"The theater is not afraid to touch on complex issues and conduct an honest and attentive dialogue with the audience. Our audience proves that they are not afraid of challenges and trust our artistic choices. The relevance and depth that the next season deals with are an expression of the confidence and trust that the audience gives us," said Yifat Tzachi Kirel, the theater's CEO.
