Food prices continue to rise sharply and there is no end in sight. But there are savings tips that will leave more money in your wallet after shopping:

Anyone who goes shopping in Germany has been noticing the rise in food prices for many months. In general, life in the Federal Republic of Germany seems to be getting more and more expensive at the moment – which many citizens feel in their wallets at the end of the month. There are several reasons for the price increases: inflation, increased energy prices or crop failures are just a few of them. But there are ways to spend less money when shopping. HEIDELBERG24 reveals savings tips that take the strain off your wallet:

Food prices have risen sharply: Consumer advice centre gives tips on how to save money

According to the Federal Statistical Office, food prices rose more than energy prices in April 2023 by 17.2 percent year-on-year. An increase that, according to information from the consumer advice center, has not been seen in the last 20 years. Between 2000 and 2019, the average inflation rate was just under 1.5 percent. Now orange juice is probably also becoming more expensive because the harvests have been poor.

If you compare the period from June 2021 to April 2023, you can see massive increases for some foods. These include wheat flour (+70 percent), sunflower and rapeseed oil (+73 percent), quark (+77 percent) and pasta (+48 percent). While some increases are justified by crises, the consumer advice center comes to the conclusion that some food price increases are neither justified nor comprehensible!

Money-saving tips for shopping: Avoid branded products at all costs

Although food prices have been falling again since May 2022, food remains more expensive for the time being than in previous years. Especially for flour, bread and baked goods, you will probably have to dig a little deeper into your pocket for a little longer, as grain prices in Germany are based on the world market.

In order to relieve the burden on consumers in Germany, the consumer advice centre has therefore published a few savings tips. Everyone knows one of them: buying fewer branded products. They are always more expensive than no-name products or the discounters' own brands. Recently, a price dispute has escalated so much that Edeka has thrown over 450 Mars products out of its range.

Cook for yourself and make your own shopping list - with these tips you can save money when shopping

Everyone has also heard of saving tip number 2. It's always best to go shopping with a shopping list and plan exactly when you want to eat which dish. This eliminates the need for expensive impulse purchases. You can also set yourself a price limit. Saving tip number 3 fits in perfectly with this and says that you should cook for yourself - for several days. Of course, this is also possible for work or on the road. So you can effectively save on weekly shopping.

Another savings tip from the consumer advice centre is that meat, sausage or fish should be replaced more often with plant-based food. These include legumes such as peas, lentils or beans, but also rice, couscous and pasta. These are not only cheaper, but also provide important nutrients such as protein, iron or carbohydrates.

Tips for shopping: Comparing helps you save money

The last savings tip is a bit more complex, but can save a lot of money on weekly shopping in the end. So you should always compare kilo or liter prices and read the fine print on the shelf. In addition, it is worth taking a look at the best-before date, as almost expired products are usually cheaper. If you go shopping in discounters like Aldi, Lidl or Rewe, you should be aware of these traps that tempt you to spend more money.

But you can not only buy food in the supermarket or discounter. It is also worth going through the market to save some money. Especially shortly before the end of the market, offers beckon. It is also worth buying fruits and vegetables during the season. For example, many customers who have spent a lot of money on cucumbers have recently complained. If you take all these savings tips to heart, you should have more money in your wallet at the end of the month. (ie)
