Lazy or right? Why it's sometimes difficult, but important, to finish work on time

2023-05-24T10:13:07.112Z

Highlights: Around 4.5 million employees in Germany worked overtime in 2021. 22 percent of the overtime is said to have been unpaid. The vast majority (72 percent) used a working time account for the excess hours. Overtime is sometimes necessary on a project-related basis, but what if you yourself are struggling to finish work on time – for no apparent reason? Do more, stay at work longer – sometimes you put too much pressure on yourself. Longer time at work does not automatically mean more efficiency.

The job is done, the working hours are reached – do you finish work on time or do you have a bad feeling? How the end of the day affects effectiveness.

Around 4.5 million employees worked overtime in 2021. These are the findings of a report by the Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS). 22 percent of the overtime is said to have been unpaid. The vast majority (72 percent) used a working time account for the excess hours. Overtime is sometimes necessary on a project-related basis, but what if you yourself are struggling to finish work on time – for no apparent reason?

Finally call it a day or do something quickly?

Sometimes you might be really in the flow at work, you make great progress and then it's actually time to call it a day. Do you stay longer and achieve something in the project or do you drop the pen, shut down the PC and go home? Sometimes it's your own conscience that keeps you at work longer than contractually agreed. How to deal with it?

Overtime and overtime – what's the difference?

In terms of labour law, overtime is when the statutory or collectively agreed maximum working hours are exceeded. By law, this is referred to as eight hours, but this can be extended to up to ten hours if an average of six calendar months does not exceed eight hours on a working day (ArbZG, § 3).

Overtime, on the other hand, is more individual: it refers to exceeding an employee's regular working hours. This includes the hours agreed on the basis of the employment contract, a company agreement or a collective agreement. These arise, informs the Regensburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, when the employer orders that work is to be continued after the actual working hours.

Finish work on time when others are still working

Especially when colleagues are still working, you can have a bad feeling if you go home on time. However, if you don't have to work overtime or meet deadlines, you don't have to feel guilty.

Working more than is required, there are various reasons

There are many reasons for overtime – sometimes, for example, overtime is confused with performance, coach Claudia Nuber informs zeit.de. On the other hand, it could also be that you want to be seen as particularly hard-working, while others hope to earn more money by doing so. Nuber also says that people who always want to give more than others are particularly powerful, but there is a catch, she informs zeit.de: "These are also the people who usually end up in the burn-out clinics at some point."

It can help, for example, if you write down how long you have worked and what you have achieved in that time. Likewise, one should not be disturbed by fluctuations in performance. You often don't work productively and effectively right away.

Longer time at work does not automatically mean more efficiency

The mere presence of many hours at work does not automatically mean that you are working productively and effectively during all those hours. The opposite may be true: Forbes magazine reports that employees who stay longer one day and complete many tasks then have less energy for the rest of the working days. However, this does not mean unnecessary overtime, for example for urgent projects. The Business News Daily portal supports this statement and writes that employees are motivated and productive when they are happy. Then the company would be able to use its employees more profitably. Recovery phases are also important for this.
