The percentage of the solidarity contribution on extra profits to energy companies, equal to 50%, "has been the subject of an assessment by the government regarding the necessary reconciliation of constitutionally protected principles, such as the ability to pay and free economic initiative, with the need to promptly find resources to be allocated to the protection of the weakest sections of the population", Giorgetti explained. "The Government, with reference to the contribution relating to the 2022 financial year, has intervened on several occasions and, after a careful balancing of the constitutionally protected interests, has set the rate at 37 percent. With reference, however, to the contribution relating to the year 2023 - having a different tax base - it considered it possible to set the relative rate at 50 percent".
