Toothpaste put to the test in 2023 - discounter brands are just as good as they are cheap

2023-05-25T11:09:51.048Z

Highlights: Stiftung Warentest tested 20 universal toothpastes. The result is consistently positive. All products do not contain critical titanium dioxide. The best toothpaste in the current test is Rossmann Prokudent for 69 cents per tube. For sensitive teeth, Netto Marken-Discount Diadent Tooth Gel is better suited for 65 cents. This makes it one of the cheapest in the test, along with the Bevola toothpaste from Kaufland, which also receives the rating "very good"

Gleaming white: This is how many people would like their teeth to be. Stiftung Warentest has now taken a closer look at 20 toothpastes. An extremely favorable one is at the forefront:

  • Stiftung Warentest tested 20 universal toothpastes (more test reports at a glance).
  • The result is consistently positive. All products do not contain critical titanium dioxide.
  • Among other things, caries prophylaxis, the removal of discoloration, but also the packaging as well as declaration and advertising claims were evaluated.

Who doesn't dream of bright white teeth? Of course, the toothpaste industry is also aware of this. Many suppliers enrich their products with critical titanium dioxide. A color pigment that makes toothpastes shine in the purest white. That's right – the toothpastes, not the teeth themselves! Since the dye can damage the genetic material, it has now been banned from the recipes of many manufacturers. The toothpastes tested by Stiftung Warentest (issue 06/2023) are also all free of titanium dioxide.

Toothpaste at Stiftung Warentest: Is fluoride necessary in toothpaste?

By the way, this is not the first time Stiftung Warentest has compared toothpastes with each other. Last year, various toothpastes were put through their paces. Even then, special attention was paid to the fluoride content, because fluoride prevents tooth decay by promoting the hardening of tooth enamel. This protective effect has been proven by many studies.

Although many people do not trust fluoride-containing pastes, Stiftung Warentest gives the all-clear: Since only small amounts of fluoride are absorbed when brushing your teeth, it does not hurt in this case. It has not yet been proven that other substances also protect against tooth decay comparably well. In the current test, all pastes contain the important fluoride. By the way, 45 percent of the overall grade was for caries prophylaxis. By the way, dogs can also suffer from tooth decay - but other ingredients are crucial for their tooth protection.

Stiftung Warentest compares toothpaste: A cheap toothpaste is at the forefront

The best toothpaste in the current test is Rossmann Prokudent for 69 cents per tube. For sensitive teeth, Netto Marken-Discount Diadent Tooth Gel is better suited for 65 cents. This makes it one of the cheapest in the test, along with the Bevola toothpaste from Kaufland, which is also available for 65 cents per tube and also receives the rating "very good". Unlike the March 2023 eco-test, no universal toothpastes failed.

Toothpaste at Stiftung Warentest: From effectiveness to packaging

30 percent of the overall grade was for the removal of discoloration. For this test procedure, enamel samples from bovine incisors are used, as they have a similar structure to human teeth. The cleaning effect of a toothpaste is partly related to the amount of abrasion on the dentin. In addition, the packaging was examined (10 percent). More precisely, whether the tubes can be completely emptied and whether they are protected against unauthorized opening.

The recyclability of the packaging was also closely examined. Furthermore, the declaration and the advertising claims (15 percent of the overall score) played a decisive role. In addition to legibility and advertising claims, it was checked whether the labeling complies with the EU Cosmetics Regulation. In addition, it was determined whether normal dental care contains active ingredients that have a proven, supportive effect. (mos)
