Local and Chilean authorities enabled this Friday the Cristo Redentor international crossing, in the province of Mendoza, which remained closed to vehicular traffic since last Sunday.
"Users of the Cristo Redentor Integral System are informed that by decision of both coordinations, starting at 12.00 Chilean time and 13.00 Argentina time, today Friday, May 26, 2023, transit is enabled for all types of vehicles through this international corridor, "says the statement published on its Twitter account by the administration of Paso Los Libertadores, in Chile.
In the same sense, the account "Paso Cristo Redentor" communicated with a video that the border crossing was already enabled for all types of vehicles 24 hours a day. "Drive with caution," the message urges, due to the presence of ice on the road.
Minutes later, the same account published the photo of the first vehicle that crossed the enabled crossing, which with its closure left about 1,500 vehicles of Chilean tourists and more than 1,000 trucks waiting in the border towns of Mendoza to cross into Chile.
Last Sunday, due to the advance of a snowstorm, the road coordination had to advance to 15 hours the closure of the border and many tourists, who had traveled on a shopping tour to Mendoza, did not manage to cross.
As for the other border crossings that connect Argentina with Chile, Cardinal Samoré is authorized to transit minor vehicles with chains. Traffic for trucks was still disabled.
As in the Cristo Redentor complex, it is recommended to travel with extreme caution, since there are sectors with ice and snow.
On the other hand, the Pehuenche and Pino Hachado complexes remain closed due to snow accumulation on the roads of both. "Conservation work and clearing of the road due to accumulation of snow / ice on the route are carried out," local authorities reported.
