In the short story First Snow, Maupassant portrayed a woman suffering from tuberculosis... which she had contracted almost voluntarily. Although she complained of being cold, her castellan husband refused to buy her a calorifer. One night, she went for hours walking barefoot in the snow in order to catch at least one cold: it was a fluxion of the chest.
It's unclear if Oslo's café waitresses read Maupassant, but it's a similar step Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) takes. Her partner Thomas is an artist with such exacerbated narcissism that he barely pays attention to her the day she returns home covered in the blood of a woman she rescued after she was bitten by a dog.
Worse: at a dinner in honor of Thomas, everyone mistakes her for his sister. The goujat had never mentioned its existence... And Signe, no less egocentric than her fiancé, to wonder: how to be noticed when you have no quality...
