A particularly strong and interesting edition of the Cannes Film Festival came to an end tonight (Saturday) at the awards ceremony of the official competition.

The Palme d'Or was won by the film Anatomy of a Fall, by French director Justine Terrier, who received the award from the legendary American actress Jane Fonda. Terrier's film is a legal drama about a successful writer (Sandra Holler), who may be responsible for her husband's death.

Terrier is only the third woman to win the Palme d'Or in the festival's 76-year history, and the second French director to win the honor (after Julia Ducourno picked up the grand prize two years ago for Titan).

The Grand Prix (the second most important prize in the competition) went to "The Zone of Interest," a chilling and serene Holocaust film by English-Jewish director Jonathan Glazer ("Sexy Beast," "Under the Skin"), about the commander of the Auschwitz death camp, Rudolf Hess, and his family, who live near the camp.

The jury prize (the third most important prize) went to the romantic comedy-drama "Fallen Leaves", by the wonderful Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki ("Safe Beach", "Man Without a Past").

The Best Actor award was won by Koji Yakosho for his role in the melancholic and gentle drama "Perfect Days" by veteran German director Wim Wenders ("Angels in the Sky of Berlin"). Wenders, 77, also presented a <>D documentary called Anselm at the festival.

Director Tran An Hong,

The Best Actress award went to Marva Dizdar for her role in "About Dry Grasses," the new epic by acclaimed Turkish director Nuri Bila Ceylan ("Once Upon a Time in Anatolia").

Best Director went to Tran An Hung for The Pit au Feu, while Best Screenplay went to Yuji Sakamoto for Monster by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (My Family).

Empty-handed

Talked-about films that came out of the competition empty-handed include "May December," a perverse Todd Haynes melodrama with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, which was acquired by Netflix for $11 million; Wes Anderson's star-studded "Asteroid City," which received excellent reviews; and "The Chimera," by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, which was received with great enthusiasm by the audience.

Other notable films screened out of competition during the festival include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth installment in the beloved adventure series (which, unfortunately, was received with a lack of enthusiasm by critics) and Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese's new film, which stunned the French Riviera (and will be released in theaters and on Apple's streaming service this fall).
