For most Germans, a must-have in the freezer: frozen pizzas. An expert tested offers from Aldi, Rewe and Co. and chose a clear winner.
Munich – According to the industry association "German Frozen Food Institute" (dti), every German citizen eats an average of 13 frozen pizzas per year. This information refers to the Corona year 2020. In the following years, sales of this frozen product in Germany continued to increase – almost 400 thousand tons were consumed in 2022. But from which manufacturer do the pizzas taste best? ZDF has taken a closer look at the classics from the refrigerated section.
Salami frozen pizzas from Rewe, Aldi and Co. in the test
From sparkling wine to microwave currywurst: The magazine for business and consumers "Wiso" regularly tests food. Now it's the turn of frozen salami pizzas. Cheap and expensive variants from different manufacturers were compared with each other. Is the higher price of about one euro per 100 grams of branded pizzas à la Dr. Oetker, Wagner and Dennsworth it, or can 30 cent alternatives of the Rewe, Aldi and Kaufland own brands keep up? These are the results at a glance:
Dennree Al Forno | The Bakery Freshness | The oven freshness | Pizza 'Ah | K Classic | Yes! Brick oven | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Manufacturer | Denns | Wainwright | Dr. Oetker | Aldi Süd | Kaufland | Rewe |
Price per 100 g | 1,04 Euro | 1,03 Euro | 90 cents | 33 cents | 33 cents | 33 cents |
Salami quality | 2nd place | 5nd place | 1nd place | 6nd place | 3nd place | 4nd place |
Fat content | 5nd place | 2nd place | 4th place: cf. a lot | 1st place: cf. little | 3nd place | 2nd place |
Taste test | without voices | 2nd place | 1nd place | without voices | 3nd place | without voices |
These results show that not all frozen pizzas are the same. Especially when it comes to salami quality and taste, there are clear differences. By way of comparison, Ökotest has also tested various frozen pizzas.
Expert chooses clear winner: This is the best frozen pizza
In addition to laboratory tests, restaurateur Francesco Ialazzo, who was awarded pizza world champion in 2021, was also asked for his expert opinion for the pizza test by "Wiso". He invited 14 guests to the taste test – the results are shown in the table overview. He himself has previously expressed his own opinion: His winner is similar to that of his guests: "Die Ofenfrische" is most reminiscent of his passion – the fluffy pizza Napoletana with a crispy edge.

The pizza expert took a closer look at the ingredient lists of all frozen pizzas and criticized: Various preservatives are included, almost all test products are topped with a cheese mix instead of regional mozzarella and the pizzas from Rewe and Aldi are covered with tomato puree instead of traditional sauce. Frozen pizzas are nowhere near traditional pizzas from a good Italian restaurant.
The dough was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The salami was well seasoned.

Nevertheless, Dr. Oetker's frozen version performs well in the test. Apart from the fat content, "Die Ofenfrische" proves to be the winner in the three categories. The cheap pizzas from Rewe and Aldi, on the other hand, performed poorly, especially in terms of salami quality – so spending a little more money can be worthwhile. (Felina Wellner)
