Berlin – FlixBus already dominates the market for long-distance bus travel and holidays in Germany. The company is also successful in other European countries and since 2021 even the American long-distance bus market leader Greyhound Lines has been part of the FlixBus Group. Now the company wants to position itself even further and even expand into India.

FlixBus goes to India: This is how the group wants to expand into Asia

FlixBus also wants to expand eastwards. This has now been officially announced by the Munich-based company. Co-founder André Schwämmlein told the German Press Agency: "India is one of the most promising markets in the world." They want to invest heavily there and become the market leader, "as in all Flix countries".

However, the long-distance bus provider does not bring its own buses to the South Asian country, but is pursuing a similar approach as with Greyhound or the Turkish long-distance bus line Kâmil Koç, which FlixBus bought in 2019.

The group, which changed its name to a European stock corporation in 2022, also wants to use a regional bus line in India. According to dpa, FlixBus wants to act mainly as an intermediary for the journeys and take care of customer service, network planning and marketing. The rides will be carried out by the local company. Initially, they want to concentrate on large cities.

FlixBus in India: What does this mean for German customers?

FlixBus connections in Germany, which were originally supposed to be integrated into the 49-euro ticket, will not be affected by the expansion to India. It remains questionable whether FlixBus long-distance journeys such as those from Kassel to Denmark will also be possible from Germany to India at some point. You could still get to Turkey with an Aida ride by changing to a Kâmil Koç bus. However, FlixBus is not yet active in Iran, Iraq and Pakistan. However, a bus from Europe to India would have to drive through these countries. In addition, such a trip would take several days, which is why a plane might be more suitable here.

According to its own information, FlixBus is active in 42 countries, is the market leader and, according to the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung, has achieved a monopoly position with a market share of 93 percent in 2017. Since 2019, there has also been a FlixTrain service to compete with Deutsche Bahn for rail transport.
